It Pays to Drive Sober: North Carolina's Safe Driver Incentive Program

A conviction for driving under the influence can be extremely costly in numerous ways. For example, someone convicted for DWI or DUI might face thousands of dollars in fines, jail time, mandatory alcohol counseling or license revocation. Additionally, hidden costs such as significantly increased insurance premiums are associated with DUI convictions as well.

North Carolina's SDIP

According to the North Carolina Department of Insurance, state lawmakers developed the SDIP to reward safe drivers with lower insurance premiums. Anyone who has been convicted of moving traffic violations or are at fault in serious accidents will be charged at higher rates. The idea is to give drivers a financial incentive to maintain safe driving habits, as well as to deter risky or dangerous behavior while behind the wheel.

The SDIP works by assigning points to an individual's driving record. The most serious offenses result with the maximum 12 points being assigned. Examples of offenses and their respective penalty points include:

  • 1 Point: Speeding no more than 10 miles per hour over a 55 mph or less limit
  • 2 Points: Illegal passing or following too closely
  • 3 Points: At-fault in an accident resulting in more than $2,500 in property damage
  • 4 Points: Passing a stopped school bus or reckless driving
  • 8 Points: Driving with a suspended license
  • 10 Points: Highway racing or speeding to elude arrest
  • 12 Points: Manslaughter, driving while impaired or DUI

Cost to Drivers

North Carolina's DOI breaks down the rate increases associated with specific SDIP point totals. For example, if a person is found going 5 mph over the speed limit in a 35 mph zone, he or she would be assigned one SDIP point, with a corresponding rate increase of 25 percent.

An increase of 25 percent represents the lowest increase possible under the program. If a driver were to commit a more serious offense, however, he or she could pay as much as 400 percent more for coverage - something many people in today's economy cannot afford.

In the end, a lot depends upon the outcome of a DUI criminal case. The hidden costs, fines, potential for jail time or other penalties are all excellent reasons to consult an experienced DUI defense attorney for an analysis of your case. The traffic stop itself, the arrest, as well as how an officer administered field sobriety tests must all be carefully scrutinized to ensure your rights have been protected. If you are charged with DUI, please consult a qualified lawyer to discuss your options.
